ShortPixel and Imagify alternative: Spark Media Optimizer

ShortPixel and Imagify are two well known names for image compression in WordPress. Spark Media Optimizer does something comparable and goes a step further: besides images it also processes PDFs and PowerPoint files in the same queue. We are honest about how it works: files are sent to SparkCore's own environment and processed there, just as ShortPixel and Imagify work as online services. Your originals stay on your own server or storage. Below we compare features and approach, as of October 2026, without adopting savings percentages or quality claims from anyone.
In short
  • Processing happens in SparkCore's environment, not on your own server
  • PDFs and PowerPoint in the same queue too
  • WebP and AVIF automatically, with fallback
  • ShortPixel has more settings, WP-CLI and a free plan

What Spark Media Optimizer does

After installation the plugin picks up your new uploads and your existing media library, sends them to SparkCore's environment, and compresses and converts them there to modern formats such as WebP and AVIF, with JPEG or PNG as a fallback for browsers that need it. PDFs and PowerPoint files go into the same queue. Processing runs in the background so your dashboard stays usable. Your originals stay with you, and safe copies exist for rollback. You do not have to choose settings per image.

How ShortPixel and Imagify work

ShortPixel works with an account and credits. You can choose a subscription or one-time credits, and there is a free plan. It offers lossy, glossy and lossless, WebP and AVIF conversion, GIF to WebP or MP4, EXIF management, exclusion rules with regex, choice per thumbnail, WP-CLI, multisite and a Cloudflare link, plus aliases for agencies. Imagify works with an account and a monthly quota in megabytes, with a free plan, a quota plan and a plan with no limit, and supports WebP, AVIF and bulk optimisation.

Features side by side

Only what the vendors state publicly. Imagify lists fewer features on its pricing page than ShortPixel; where something is missing, that does not mean it does not exist.

Where ShortPixel and Imagify are stronger

ShortPixel offers many more controls: choosing between lossy, glossy and lossless, regex exclusions, choice per thumbnail, WP-CLI for scheduled tasks, multisite, a Cloudflare link and per client aliases for agencies. Both have a free plan to start without risk, and Imagify has a simple interface with a quota model that is easy to understand. If you need fine control over how each image is treated, or run a complex environment, they are ahead of Spark Media Optimizer, which deliberately works without manual tuning.

The pricing model in words

Spark Media Optimizer is sold per number of sites, yearly or monthly, with a limit per plan: you get a notice at around 80 percent and at the maximum, after which processing waits until your limit resets or you take a larger plan. ShortPixel works with credits, by subscription or one-time. Imagify works with a monthly quota in megabytes and a plan with no limit. The arithmetic therefore differs per vendor: per site, per credit or per volume. We do not name amounts on purpose.

How we compared

We read the Spark Media Optimizer product page and contact FAQ, and the public pricing pages of ShortPixel and Imagify, as of October 2026. We do not adopt the savings percentages from our own product page here, because they depend on your files. For exactly where ShortPixel and Imagify process, we only read the pricing pages; consult their terms and processor overview for details.
