WooCommerce search without an external service

Many fast search solutions for WooCommerce send your catalog and your visitors' searches to an external service. That works, but it costs a monthly subscription, an extra processor in your privacy policy and a dependency outside your own site. There is another way: your own search index in your own database.
In short
  • Your own search index is fast without data leaving your site
  • Default WordPress search uses slow LIKE queries and has no typo tolerance
  • Spark Search indexes title, SKU, brand, category and tags

Why default WooCommerce search falls short

By default, WordPress searches with LIKE queries on the posts and metadata tables. On a small site you barely notice, but with a few thousand products every search becomes a heavy database query. WordPress also only searches title, content and excerpt: it will not find an SKU, a brand or a variation, and a typo returns nothing.

External search services: fast, but at a price

A cloud search service solves the speed problem by copying your catalog to its servers. You then often pay per month or per number of searches, you add the service to your privacy policy, and when the service has a hiccup, so does your search bar. For many online stores that is more than they need.
  • Recurring costs that grow with your traffic
  • Visitor search data held by a third party
  • An extra dependency outside your own site

Your own search index in your own database

Spark Search builds its own normalized search index in your WordPress database. Title, SKU (including variations), brand, category and tags are ready to be searched at high speed. The index stays current through WooCommerce hooks and a daily refresh, and no search data goes to third parties.

What visitors notice

Suggestions appear while someone types, with products, categories, brands and articles in one dropdown. If a search term finds nothing, a second round follows that tolerates typos. The search bar itself is a light bundle of about 9 KB of vanilla JS, without jQuery, so your load time does not suffer.
  • Live suggestions as you type
  • Typos handled by a fuzzy second round
  • Add a product to the cart straight from the dropdown

Tip: After a week, check the searches without results in the statistics. One click turns them into a synonym or a customer service rule, so the next visitor does find something.
