WPML alternative for Breakdance: Spark Multilingual
Looking for a WPML alternative and building with Breakdance? Then you are looking at a different approach: Spark Multilingual turns your existing site into a multilingual site without maintaining a copy of every page per language. Translations live in a separate layer on top of the source, and you translate with your own DeepL or Claude key. There is one limit we state up front: Spark Multilingual only works with Breakdance. If you build with something else, WPML is the more logical choice. This page compares features and approach, not speed or quality, as of October 2026.
In short
- Breakdance only, that is the trade-off
- One source page, no copy per language
- Your own DeepL or Claude key, no per-word markup
- WPML covers more themes, builders and translator teams
What Spark Multilingual does
Spark Multilingual reads the existing Breakdance tree and translates at field level. The source page stays the only version you maintain; each language is a layer on top. That keeps a translation linked when you change the source page, and you use one stylesheet for every language. You translate with a live preview: click a text block and translate it directly. An overview shows per page and per language what is complete, outdated or still empty.
How WPML works
WPML is a broadly usable translation plugin for WordPress with several plans. The lowest plan translates through the standard WordPress editor; the side-by-side translation editor, string translation for themes and plugins, translation management, page builder support, menu translation and WooCommerce support are in the higher plans. AI translation uses its own engine with a number of included words per plan; you can also choose DeepL, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator. Updates and support run per year; after that the plugin keeps working, but without updates.
Features side by side
The table below compares what both products state on their own public pages. Where a point is not stated, we say so.
| Feature | Spark Multilingual | WPML |
|---|---|---|
| Target platform | Breakdance sites on WordPress only | General WordPress, themes and many page builders |
| Pages per language | One source page, no copy | Translations are managed as their own content |
| Translation method | Field level in the Breakdance tree | Side-by-side translation editor (higher plans) |
| AI translation | Your own DeepL or Claude key, no per-word markup | Own engine with included words, also DeepL, Google and Microsoft |
| Without an AI key | Manually in the Studio or by CSV import | Manually in the translation editor |
| Translator teams and agencies | Not mentioned on the product page | Translation management and links with translation services |
| hreflang and sitemaps | Automatic per language | Not stated on the purchase page |
| Unfinished translated page | Gets noindex, never half translated in Google | Not stated on the purchase page |
| WooCommerce | Products, terms and attributes included; order follows the customer language | Own WooCommerce support in higher plans |
| Disabling the plugin | Site keeps running in the source language | Translations stay visible, updates stop when the licence lapses |
| Licence model | Per number of sites, yearly or monthly | Per plan per year, with a site limit and support |
Where WPML is stronger
WPML is not tied to Breakdance. If you use Elementor, Gutenberg or another theme, you simply cannot use Spark Multilingual. WPML also offers translation management for teams of translators, links with professional translation services, string translation for any plugin or theme, and its own AI engine with included words, so you do not need to arrange a separate AI key. If you have an editorial team or an agency of human translators, that is a real advantage.
When Spark Multilingual fits
Spark Multilingual fits when your site is already built in Breakdance and you do not want duplicate pages. You pay the translation service directly through your own key, with no per-word markup from our side. If you disable the plugin, the site simply keeps running in the source language. The pricing model is per number of sites, yearly or monthly, from a single site up to unlimited. For web shops, products, terms and attributes are translated along. Note: there is no built-in translator team or agency workflow; you work in the Studio or through CSV import.
How we compared
We read the Spark Multilingual product page and the public WPML purchase page, as of October 2026. We compare features and approach, not speed or translation quality, because we have no source for that. We deliberately do not name prices; check those with the vendors themselves. If you see something that is not right, tell us and we will correct the page.
Test with one language and one page first. Spark Multilingual also works without an AI key, through the Studio or CSV import.

Frequently asked questions
No. It only works on WordPress sites built with Breakdance (WordPress 6.0 or higher, PHP 8.1 or higher). For other builders, WPML is the better fit.
No. With your own DeepL or Claude key you translate automatically and pay the service directly. Without a key you fill in translations manually in the Studio or through CSV import.
The layer is additive: the source text of pages, headers, footers and templates is never changed. If you disable the plugin, the site keeps running in the source language.
