Best WordPress performance plugins by job (wordpress.org data, October 2026)

There is no single best performance plugin: there are five jobs, and a few good candidates per job. This list puts them side by side per job with the facts from wordpress.org (active installs, rating, last update and minimum PHP version, retrieved on 16 October 2026) and an honest note. A speed ranking is deliberately left out: we only publish one once our lab measurements are done. We make Spark Speed ourselves; it is listed separately with the paid plugins.
In short
  • Five jobs: page cache, CSS/JS, images, object cache and CDN
  • One plugin per job; two plugins for the same job get in each other's way
  • All figures from wordpress.org, as of 16 October 2026
  • No speed winner yet: that follows from our lab measurements

First: which job should the plugin do?

A "performance plugin" can do five different jobs: caching pages, optimizing CSS and JavaScript, shrinking images, caching database data or serving files through a CDN. Some plugins do several. Pick one plugin per job, and not two plugins for the same job: double page caches or double CSS optimization are a common cause of errors.

Page cache

Stores complete pages so WordPress does not rebuild them every time. Pick one; two page caches at the same time get in each other's way.

CSS, JavaScript and load order

Minifies, combines or delays files. This is where layout or functionality can break, so test after every change.

Paid plugins without wordpress.org figures

These plugins are not on wordpress.org, so there are no public install or rating figures. We make Spark Speed; that is why it is listed separately.
  • WP Rocket: Page cache plus optimizations; not on wordpress.org (official pricing page)
  • FlyingPress: Page cache plus optimizations; not on wordpress.org (official pricing page)
  • Perfmatters: Turns off scripts and features per page; no page cache (official pricing page)
  • Object Cache Pro: Paid Redis object cache from the makers of Redis Object Cache (official pricing page)
  • Spark Speed (ours): page cache, optimizations and object cache in one plugin; not on wordpress.org (pricing)

Pricing pages checked on 16 October 2026; prices change, so we do not list them here.

Why there is no speed winner here yet

A fair speed comparison needs the same site, the same server and several measurements per plugin, and the outcome depends on your theme, builder and hosting. We are measuring that in our lab; until those numbers exist, we do not rank by speed. Installs and ratings say something about popularity and maintenance, not about speed on your site.

How to choose

A few questions quickly narrow the list down to one or two candidates per job:
  • What does your host already provide? LiteSpeed hosting, SiteGround, Kinsta, WP Engine and Cloudways have their own cache layer; then pick the plugin that works with it.
  • Do you run a shop or have logged-in users? Then check that cart, checkout and my account are not cached, and consider an object cache.
  • When was the plugin last updated and up to which WordPress version has it been tested?
  • Where does processing happen: on your own server or at an external service, with a quota or credits?
  • After every change, test the menu, forms, cookie banner and cart on your phone.
Start with the job where your site loses the most. Check in PageSpeed Insights which metric costs points, and only then pick a plugin.
Spark Speed handles page cache, optimizations and object cache in one plugin and tests risky changes on your own pages first.

Frequently asked questions

That depends on your hosting. On LiteSpeed hosting, LiteSpeed Cache is the obvious choice; at SiteGround, Cloudways, Kinsta and WP Engine the host's plugin or cache. On other hosting, WP Super Cache, WP Fastest Cache and WP-Optimize are widely used free page caches.

Yes, if they do different jobs, for example a page cache, an image optimizer and an object cache. Do not use two plugins for the same job.

Because a fair ranking needs measurements on the same site and server. We are doing those in our lab; we will publish the outcome separately, with method and date.
